What are you going to do for health insurance?

I’m not going to lie.  This is my biggest concern.  Julie and I both have chronic issues that have a potential to cause problems on the trip.  There is travel insurance and we most definitely will be getting it.  If you are traveling abroad you should definitely look into it.  Your personal health insurance probably doesn’t cover you outside the USA.  There are limits to what travel insurance will cover.  Any emergency hospital visits for illness or injury, but no prescription coverage.  I’m sure there are plans out there that do, but they are out of our price range.  The “Oh Shit!” insurance will have to do.

I have to take a prescription to help keep my condition in check so that is a concern.  I talked to my doctor and there are less expensive alternatives that don’t work quite as well and require me to be a little more careful.  It does make me a little nervous just because I’m always terrified that the second I don’t have health insurance I’ll be struck with some life threatening disease.  Like many Americans I was raised to believe that you have to have health insurance which in this country means you have to have a job.   That has prevented me from just quitting to go travel or do whatever before.  Getting independent insurance was never an option because no insurance company would underwrite me with a preexisting condition.  At least when we get back we’ll be able to purchase it if we need it since the new health laws zapped the whole preexisting condition thing.  How much it will actually cost is something I don’t want to think about for while and since I don’t have to, I won’t.
