So, where to start?

To be honest, I don’t remember what search term I put into Google to start my research.  I was cruising airbnb.com for apartments in Croatia and after finding several quality places at what I considered to be ridiculously low prices I lamented the fact that I was going to only have a maximum of three weeks.  After deciding that this was unacceptable, I started looking for folks who were traveling long term.

The first site I came across was Johnny Vagabond.  After about five minutes on his site and reading about he was able to live comfortably enough in Laos for less than $25 a day I was definitely encouraged.  It couldn’t be that easy could it?  Traveling the world and doing web and graphic design work on your laptop to support your travel habit?  That’s what I’ve wanted to do for years but for some reason never explored it.

Digging deeper I found Nomadic Matt. Here was a guy who had been traveling for the most part since 2004 and had created his own self-sustaining travel business out of sharing what he had learned.  Lots of great travel tips and ideas for those looking to backpack on the cheap.  Now I was getting very confident, we can do this.  Except for the fact that everything I’d read so far focused on the individual traveler.  We were going to attempt this as a couple.  There had to be blogs that focused on that, right?  Of course there were.

That’s when I found Goats on the Road.  A Canadian couple who have been traveling for over two years now, their stories and travel tips sealed the deal. This was the website I sent to Julie first.  “We can totally do this.”  They have lots of good checklists for essential trip items that I’ll be using as my starting point.

Another great couples site with very detailed budget and planning information is A Couple Travelers.  I know there are more out there and I’ll share more as I find them, but it only took these four to convince me.  Time to start planning.
